The 2018 Lemon Awards

The 2018 Lemon Awards

WE'RE BACK, IT'S THE ANNUAL LEMON AWARDS... this is the first year I'm going full out though... because this year this blog was rebranded to strictly music, and I've worked hard to produce content this year. Next year should be easier. There are even certificates this year for the winners...I've put a lot into these awards this year. I started working on these awards at the start of the year, and I take into consideration everything from the year. Every release, every band I've seen live, every interaction, what made bands stand out. The atmosphere and energy at gigs. Sometimes it's literally a set list of the way a band interacted with me that gave them a slight edge. This is because some bands have been incredible but some have been slightly rude in comparison to others. Some bands have seemed like they'd rather be anywhere but the gig they're playing, and some bands have still put energy in even if there's only a handful of people there.
I should explain how these work, pretty much what I will do is I'll give you the category. Some categories will have more entries than others, for example, releases will have more entries in comparison to live acts. I'll put at the end of each category why the top ones won the awards and in some categories, there's one award and in some, there's five. Mainly it's three per category though.
So let me stop rambling, and we shall get into this!
I will say I haven't done like "My favourite frontman..." because we all already know it's Sam McTrusty... BUT LET'S DO THIS!
Best Live Act
3. Don't Forget Rupert
2. The Mocking Jays
1. Twin Atlantic.
All three bands have got a little award. I will always argue that Twin Atlantic are the best live, and when I saw them this year at Slam Dunk, I was 100% reminded just how good they are, and then it was a very close call between TMJ and Don't Forget Rupert. But one reason I ranked TMJ that notch higher is just because they are better live than on a studio recording. There probably is only like 0.1% between the two though.

Best Releases Of The Year...
15. Sum Of All Your Parts by Fatherson
14. A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships by The 1975
13. Whirlpool by Distant Blue
12. Pieces by Valencia
11. Technology by Don Broco
10. Sunnyland by Mayday Parade
9.  Rituals by Deaf Havana
8.  Red Lights by Milestones
7. Living Proof by State Champs
6. Proper Dose by The Story So Far
5. VI by You Me At Six
4. The American Dream by Trophy Eyes
3. Full Circle by Don't Forget Rupert
2. Edge Of Your Knife by The Mocking Jays
1. Kiss My Neck by The Mocking Jays
Five awards, TMJ got 2, 1 for Don't Forget Rupert and you get the gist... we all knew the mocks would win one of these, because well, they released two killer songs this year. I got one of them tattooed on me... so it's no shock. I absolutely love all the releases I mentioned but the top 5 all just stood out to me.
Favourite Music Discoveries Of The Year...
5. Distant Blue
4. Fast Car To Florence
3. Trophy Eyes
2. Don't Forget Rupert
1. The Mocking Jays
The top three have an award, I've discovered a lot of bands this year but these have been the ones who have stood out, they're the ones who's music I've listened to the most, and the ones I've reached for this year. The reason 4/5 are local bands is that I've fallen back in love with the local music scene, and now I can drive it's meant I can go to gigs and discover more bands.

Best Thing That Happened In Music This Year...
2. Valencia actually releasing a new song after years and years of us all highly anticipating their return to music.
1. Every Avenue reuiniting.
One award, sorry but Every Avenue coming back was long awaited. I cried... full on cried. So they had to get the award.

What Music Has Done For Me This Year...
- My friendship with Sam
- I finally met Josh
- Music saved my life this year
- My friendship with Jay
No awards because this wasn't ranked, but I did make a little award for Sam because she's done so much for me this year.
Best Not New Songs Of The Year...
3. Take You Home by The Mocking Jays
2. Long Time Coming by Don't Forget Rupert
1. The Chaser by Twin Atlantic
I don't even need to explain these, love love love all of them.

Best Overall Band Of The Year...
1. The Mocking Jays and Don't Forget Rupert
Besides Twin Atlantic, it's these two bands who have made the biggest impressions on me this year. I couldn't pick just one, so they both got the award.

Music has done a lot for me this year, it's gave me new friends like, Becky, Sam Zoe, Hatty, Jay, so many people. It's made me and Amber even closer and made more memories for us. And I'm thankful for what music has done for me. This year hasn't been the best for me, so maybe next year might not be my weekend but it might be my year... Life hasn't been great, but music got me through it.

Go and show some love to every band I mentioned in this post. Every band, if you see this post, why not share it and tag bands in it. Tell your friends about these bands, because in my world and my music taste, these have been the stand out bands.
See you in 2019!

Empty Streets by Aim High

Welcome/welcome back to the blog! On today’s instalment of Grace rambles about small bands and their latest releases, we have Aim High with their latest single Empty Streets.   Now, we all know I’m a sucker for a good Aim High release, and they always put out belters of tracks!   This track features Driveways, it has a different vibe to previous tracks, but as we've spoken about before, Aim High tend to change their sound with each track, or nearly every track. Never drastic changes, but noticeable. This track is very unique, there's a lot of different tempo changes. There's a noticeable change between the verses and chorus, but it's a sound I'm here for. The bridge in the track is insane.  This is such a great track it's an impactful track. This is honestly a belter. This is such a surreal track, honestly a belter. This may not be my favourite track from Aim High but it's definitely one worth checking out and showing some love about. This is honestly such a

Pink Alligator by Those Without

Welcome/welcome back to the blog! Today I’m super excited to be talking to you about Pink Alligator by Those Without. Now, Those Without are a band I’ve listened to for a few months and I’ve liked the releases they’ve put out. However, no previous track has got me as hyped as Pink Alligator did.   Knowing what sort of tracks Those Without put out, I was pretty excited for this release, and I had pretty decent expectations.   I want to start off by saying since this track was released, I have been listening to it constantly. Every time I get in the car I'm there putting it on repeat for my drive, everytime I go to listen to music, I'm going to be there listening to this track. I am well and truly obsessed with it. So, when I tell you that this song has blown my mind and really has beaten all expectations I had for it, I mean it.  Pink Alligator has an infectious beat to it, and it's one of the catchiest tracks to be released recently. The tempo changes between the verses a

A Spark To Ignite by Royals

Welcome/welcome back to the blog! Today we're going to be talking about Royals again. Royals went and dropped a new EP on Friday, and I feel like it was something we all needed in our lives.  I  had pretty decent expectations for this EP judging by the 4 tracks we’ve already heard off the EP. I’ve done a full review of Worldwide Catastrophe and Jaded so I won’t be saying much about them, but I never reviewed Fair-Weather Friend and Out of Reach, so I will speak a little about them but probably not the same amount as Gone.   Anyway, the EP opens with Worldwide Catastrophe. This is an absolute belter of a track. This track is surreal. It packs a punch, it does everything you’d want it to do and more. It’s just insane. I absolutely love this track, I loved it when it first released and I love it all the same now. It’s a great song and one I still highly recommend!   The second track is Fair-Weather Friend. This was one of the first tracks released off this EP, and it is an incredibl
